Banning media coverage of RH deliberations at the bicam: A bane to public's right to know

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines expresses grave concern over the banning of media coverage of the bicameral conference committee deliberation of the Reproductive Health bill.

We do not see any reason why this stage of legislation of a very controversial bill--and therefore is of immense public interest--is not being opened fully to public scrutiny.

It doesn't help that a legislator has issued a confusing statement saying media persons can cover the event but the public can view it.

The flimsy excuse given was to keep legislators from grandstanding. Why in the world is the press being blamed for the misbehavior of these "honorables"?

The full process of law enactment should be transparent, and keeping the media away denies the people of their right to know.
