DepEd: Not all schools in Zamboanga ready for K to 12 senior high school program

ZAMBOANGA CITY, May 15 (PNA) -– The Department of Education (DepEd) is eyeing to initially establish one school per district that will offer senior high school program in this city.

City Schools Division officer-in-charge Superintendent Pedro Melchor Natividad said Thursday not all of the 34 public high schools are ready to offer the Senior High School course under the K to 12 program.

Natividad disclosed not all the public high schools have the capacity to offer Senior High School in terms of buildable space and teaching staffs.

“Space is important as laboratories for technical vocational courses must be built and the teachers must be properly trained for the Senior High School program,” Natividad said.

The Senior High School students under the K to 12 will have the privilege of selecting their field of specialization such as pre-college education, vocational, arts and sports education or further study in college.

The Senior High School is the Grade 11 and Grade 12 levels under the K to 12 program and the DepEd is mandated to implement it starting 2016.

Natividad said they are currently checking all the public high schools to determine the schools’ need in the implementation of the K to 12 program. (PNA)
