Heritage Dapitan Celebrates Lent and Sun Fun and Rock n Roll 2016

Relief Map of Mindanao and Saint James,
the Greater Church

After two eventful months in Dapitan City where the Local Government Unit facilitated the First Tourism Stakeholders Consultation for 2016, hosted a workshop for the Pension Houses and Hotel Operators re: Incentivizing Labor Law Compliance and other Labor Laws, Brainstorming for the World Art Camp Olympiad, participating in the consultative forum hosted by NEDA, brainstorming with DOT National and Regional Officials for the drafting of the 2017-2022 National Tourism Development Plan, Launching of Dapitan's Digital Tourism Program which was given by Smart Communications as a grant and is the first in Mindanao, holding of the 2016 Kagang Festival and Acceptance of Dapitan City as a an awardee in the 2015 National Legislative Award during the holding of the Councilors League in Iloilo City among others, Dapitan City will again be celebrating Lent preserving the old traditions and mores showing the religious opulence of its people.

Dapitanons from all over the country would usually come home just to immerse itself in the old Dapitan tradition where processions, visita iglesia, station of the cross and seven last words   may still be witnessed with ardor.

The fasting in itself is still on with some modifications. It may be just "binignit" for Good Friday but the serving is so generous, not to mention the numerous ingredients which to my mind would even surpass the most popular halohalo in the country. Black Saturday is also an awaited day for the blessing of water, candles, new bibles, rosary and all other things that aid in the manifestation of religious faith.

Easter Sunday which is called "tagbo" in the vernacular is an equally crowd drawer.

Following thereafter is the 6-Day 2016 Sun Fun and Rock n Roll celebration kick off with the City Tourism Office as host which venue is the entire stretch of Sunset Boulevard where a short program will be held followed by a Drums Exhibition, Regatta, Pole Boxing and a cultural show in the evening.

Another huge crowd is being expected in this celebration just like the usual scores of attendance during the past years. Engr. Silvan Hamoy is the main facilitator of these events, of course with the full support of the City Tourism Staff and the Pamilya Mas Pachada Dapitan led by Mayor Rosalina G. Jalosjos, Vice Mayor Ruben Cad and the City Councilors with Mr. Wilberth Magallanes.

Day 2 is on April 1 intended for the Information Dissemination of the pressing concerns which the youth is facing. A symposium will be held and to talk about the evils of addictive drugs is the Regional Director of PDEA in Region X, a TV celebrity himself the popular RD Wilkins M. Villanueva.

Day 3 is on April 5 with a Tree Planting and Sports Fest featuring "Mga Larong Pinoy."

Days 4 to 6 are slated for a Youth Leadership Training which will be facilitated by CSWD on April 6 to 8.

Dapitan City is indeed worth visiting because there are just a lot of things to do there. For more information about the Shrine City of the Philippines, please download "Dapitan Guide App" from google either for android or IOS Smartphones free of charge.
