Abus eyeing potential kidnap victims killed in joint AFP-PNP operations in Tawi-Tawi

ZAMBOANGA CITY (February 10, 2017) - Joint law enforcement operations launched by the military and police against the Abu Sayyaf Group under Ninok Sappari resulted to the death of the two Abus at the Municipality of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi yesterday afternoon, military official said.

Western Mindanao Command Information Officer Cpt. Jo-Ann D. Petinglay disclosed that killed was an Abu Sayaff member and follower of Sappari, Mahdi Abdurahman at Brgy Pahut same municipality while Sappari was neutralized later that evening at Brgy Nalil, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi during the pursuit operation targeting said ASG leader who was able to escape the earlier engagement. 

Petinglay added, the operation was initially conducted at the Almari Beach Resort in Barangay Pahut, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi where the two are said to be staying while looking and eyeing possible kidnap victims from the said resort but were however reported by a concerned civilian after suspecting their movements. 

Ninok Sappari was able to evade apprehending forces and ran to the forested area after noticing the apprehending troops. According to bystanders, Sappari, while evading the troops, appeared to be wounded since blood stains were seen along his tracks.

Later that evening, he was neutralized in Barangay Nalil of same municipality by the government forces who conducted pursuit operation to get him.

Sappari is the leader of the notorious ASG Lucky 9 group of Sulu which perpetrated the assassinations of military personnel. The group was also engaged lately on kidnapping of local victims in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

"All available forces are being deployed to pursue and neutralize the Abu Sayyaf Group. These recent operations have caused setbacks, casualties and losses on the terrorist group," said Major General Carlito G. Galvez, Jr., Commander, Western Mindanao Command.


"We will not stop until we get them all or until they decide to return to the folds of the law and surrender," MGen Galvez added.
