Troops encounter Abu Sayyafs in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY (February 1, 2017) – An armed confrontation ensued between operating troops of the Joint Task Force Sulu and the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) led by sub-leader Alhabsy Misaya in Barangay Pugad Manaul, Panamao in the nearby Province of Sulu yesterday morning, military official said.

Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) Spokesperson LTC Franco Raphael H. Alano disclosed that the said Abu Sayyaf Group withdrew shortly after the engagement but responding government forces caught up with them while they were fleeing resulting to another exchange of gunfire.

Alano also said that based on reports, five (5) members of the said Abu Sayyaf Group were killed in the series of encounters while seven (7) others were wounded. On the other hand, two (2) government troops were also wounded in the firefight.

Government troops are now in pursuit of the said terrorist group while other military units cordoned the area to restrict the movement of the fleeing terrorists. So far, numerous blood stains were discovered near the site of the armed clashes, Alano added.

Major General Carlito G. Galvez Jr., the Commander of Western Mindanao Command, commended Joint Task Force “SULU” for their untiring dedication to their duties and made sure that the wounded will be given prompt and due medical treatment. He further encouraged the troops to press on until the peace that the people of Sulu deserve is attained.

The military continues to intensify the conduct of focused military operations against the Abu Sayyaf members who are responsible for the series of kidnappings and atrocities in the province of Sulu.
