Fleet-Marine Units rescued 1 Indonesian Kidnap Victim, neutralized 3 ASG and recovered Fire Arms in Sulu

PAGADIAN CITY (April 6, 2019) – Fleet-Marine units rescued one Indonesian Kidnap Victim, neutralized three Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members and recovered loose firearms and ammunition during an encounter with ASG members while conducting Focused Military Operations and Maritime Security Patrol on April 5, 2019 at Simisa Island, Banguingui, Sulu, military official disclosed.

Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) Commander Rear Admiral Erick A.Kagaoan said that the Fleet-Marine Units involved were Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu (PMRFS), under Joint Task Force Sulu (JTFS) of Western Mindanao Command composed by elements from Inshore Boat Battalion (IBBN), Force Recon Group (FRG), Marine Battalion Landing Teams (MBLTs), Naval Special Operations Unit (NAVSOU), and different Philippine Navy war ships and vessels, all under the command of Bgen Divino Rey C Pabayo, Jr., Commander of Joint Task Force Sulu (JTFS).

Kagaoan added that the Philippine Navy component is headed by Col Armel S Tolato PN(M)(MNSA), Commander of Naval Task Group Sulu (NTGS) / Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu.


Kagaoan identified the rescued Indonesian Kidnap Victim as Heri Ardiansyah. He was rescued while the said Fleet-Marine Units were conducting Maritime Security Patrol to rescue the Foreign Kidnap Victims at Simisa Island, Sulu.

Kagaoan explained that during the rescue operations, the operating troops encountered the captors composed of three ASG members under ASG Leader Najir Arik at Simisa Island Banguingui, Sulu. The ensued firefight lasted for 10 minutes, which resulted to the neutralization of the said three ASG members, with no casualty on government side.  


The operations were led to the recovery of two M14 rifles; two M16 rifles; one M203 grenade launcher; one 40MM ammunition; one long magazine of M16 rifle and 29 live rounds of 5.56MM.


Kagaoan also said that the said rescued Kidnap Victim, Heri Ardiansya was one of the two remaining Indonesian Kidnap Victims at Simisa Island. During the intense military operations, the two Kidnap Victims were able to escape from their ASG captors and swim towards the sea wherein Philippine Navy vessels spotted and conducted manuevers to rescue them while their captors were being engaged by Philippine Marine troops. However, 1 Kidnap Victim, identified as Hariadin drowned to death before being rescued by government troops, while Heri Ardiansya survived.

The rescued Kidnap Victim was transported to Camp Navarro General Hospital at Calarian, Zamboanga City for immediate medical attention.


The Commander Naval Forces Western Mindanao, Rear Admiral Erick A Kagaoan AFP commends the troops for another job well done and urge the Fleet-Marine Troops to continue their noble efforts and sacrifices to defeat the terrorist groups in its area of operation in order to secure Western Mindanao maritime domain and finally achieve peace and development in the region.
