PNP ACTIVATES DISASTER RESPONSE UNITS

QUEZON CITY (July 19, 2018) - The Philippine National Police has activated its disaster response units to augment local PNP units as Southwest Monsoon or Habagat causes torrential rain and flash floods in the Metro Manila, and other areas and provinces.

At the National Headquarters, the PNP High Command activated its National Headquarters Disaster Incident Management Task Group (DIMTG), an updated and enhanced plan of action of the PNP on disaster preparedness and response management in support to other concerned agencies.

According to Police Director Eduardo Serapio M Garado, the Director for Police Community Relations (DPCR) and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Disaster Management, DIMTG supports the government’s disaster risk reduction and management efforts in accordance with the PNP Critical Incident Management Operational Procedures (CIMOP).

PNP disaster response-capable units include, Special Action Force, Maritime Group, Highway Patrol Group, Police Community Relations Group, as well as the Regional Public Safety Battalions, were instructed to coordinate closely with NDRRMC and Local government units for possible enforcement of forced evacuation in flood-stricken areas due to heavy rains.

“This is one of those seasonal situations when the PNP is called upon to perform public safety operations to save lives,” PNP Chief Director General Oscar D Albayalde.

Disaster response troops, equipment and supplies were prepared to affected areas as Tropical Depression Henry intensifies the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat in the country.

On the other hand, weather state bureau, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said the affected areas are: Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro Provinces, Palawan and Western Visayas, in which heavy rains and flash floods are expected to happen within 24 hours.

PAGASA added scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may prevail in other parts of the country. (PNP-PIO)
