Fearing for his life, Daulah Islamiyah member yields in Lanao del Sur

PAGADIAN CITY (March 4, 2021) - The relentless combat operations of the Joint Task Force ZamPeLan compelled a member of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group to surrender on Tuesday afternoon, March 2, 2021

According to Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., Commander of the Western Mindanao Command, the successful surrender of the DI-MG member identified as a.k.a. Dimakuta, 40 years old and a resident of Barangay Mamaanum, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur, was made possible through the efforts of the 51st Infantry Battalion.

“The said DI-MG member handed over his Norinco AK47 rifle and Bandolier with two magazines and 24 live ammunition to Lt. Col. Fernando Payapaya, Commanding Officer of the 51IB at the unit’s Tactical Command Post in Barangay Matampay, Munai, Lanao del Norte at 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday,” said Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr.

During the initial debriefing, the subject revealed that he was recruited by a certain “Arafat” sometime in 2019 exploiting his standing warrant of arrest for alleged kidnapping. He also recounted the fear and hardships he experienced due to the ongoing focused military operations.

“With our very weak defense, the chance of survival is too little so I decided to surrender because I still want to live and spend the rest of my life living peacefully with my family,” said “Dimakuta” in the local language.

103rd Infantry Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Jose Maria Cuerpo II said the surrendered personality will subsequently be enrolled in the livelihood program of the government in preparation for his reintegration into mainstream society.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, Commander of the Joint Task Force ZamPeLan said that the military is exhausting all its available assets to press on the remaining terrorists hiding in the hinterlands of the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces.

“We urge all those who are still hiding to just lay down their arms and return to the folds of the law,” said Maj. Gen. Ponio.

The surrendered personality is currently undergoing custodial debriefing facilitated by the 51IB.

“We are optimistic that his comrades will also be enlightened and will come out soon,” said Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr.

“Rest assured that we will support all those who wish to surrender so that they will not be deceived to engage in lawless activities again,” the commander added. (By JONG CADION with reports and photos from WesMinCom-PIO)
