Zambo Sur cops file charges against 4 captured pirates

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Aug. 25 (PNA) – Police have filed criminal charges against four suspected pirates they recently captured following a brief firefight off the shores of Vincenzo Sagun town, this province.

Sr. Supt. Sofronio Ecaldre, provincial police director, told the Philippines News Agency that among the charges they filed against the arrested suspects included illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and direct assault to an agent of the law.

Ecaldre identified the suspects as Joveto Galorio; Bobby Jerusalem; Joel Langgam; and, Fredo Oclaret, all residents of Igat Island in nearby Margosatubig town.

Ecaldre said the suspects were captured following a five-minute firefight with policemen around 3 p.m. Friday near the shore of Barangay Biu-Os, Vincenzo Sagun town.

He said Junjie Isbot, a companion of the suspects, was killed during the firefight that ensued when the patrolling policemen chanced upon them.

He said the group of the suspects was believed to be behind the piracy incidents within the Dumanguilas Bay area.

He said the patrolling policemen confiscated from the suspects’ possessions a Garand rifle with 22 rounds of ammunition.

He said the suspects were detained at the lock-up cell of the Vincenzo Sagun Municipal Police Station. (PNA)
