By ALI G. MACABALANG
(NOTE: The subject of the story is my cousin, an icon of true public service. I wrote this piece in tribute to her in the name of good governance and peace-building.)

COTABATO CITY – Thousands of people from various walks of life in the country and elsewhere are mourning the death of a Mindanao-based Muslim lady educator they adored as an “icon” of peace building, good governance and quality education for the Bangsamoro.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front leadership led the mourners, posting in its official website – luwaran.com – a message of condolence and a tribute to Dr. Hadja Sittie Nurlayla Emily M. Marohombsar, the first woman state peace panelist it had dealt with during the stormy days of the MILF-government peace talks.

“I know her very well (as) a very amiable personality and so easy to deal with… We would miss another good person and may Allah bless her soul,” MILF chief peace panelist Mohagher Iqbal said in the online message, referring to Dr. Marohombsar.

Why Disinformation Works. In America “Truth has no Relevance. Only Agendas are Important”

By Global Research

Have you ever wondered how the government’s misinformation gains traction?

What I have noticed is that whenever a stunning episode occurs, such as 9/11 or the Boston Marathon bombing, most everyone whether on the right or left goes along with the government’s explanation, because they can hook their agenda to the government’s account.

The leftwing likes the official stories of Muslims creating terrorist mayhem in America, because it proves their blowback theory and satisfies them that the dispossessed and oppressed can fight back against imperialism.

The patriotic rightwing likes the official story, because it proves America is attacked for its goodness or because terrorists were allowed in by immigration authorities and nurtured by welfare, or because the government, which can’t do anything right, ignored plentiful warnings.

Whatever the government says, no matter how problematical, the official story gets its traction from its compatibility with existing predispositions and agendas.

In such a country, truth has no relevance. Only agendas are important.

A person can see this everywhere. I could write volumes illustrating how agenda-driven writers across the spectrum will support the most improbable government stories despite the absence of any evidence simply because the government’s line can be used to support their agendas.

During the installation of CCTVs (Photo provided)

KUTA SANG-AN, LABANGAN, ZAMBOSUR – The 103rd Infantry Brigade credited the success of the recent election in Lanao del Sur with the presence of Close Circuit Television (CCTVs) Cameras in major voting precincts in the province before and during the casting of votes last 13 May 2013.

Before the election date, the Brigade has initiated series of consultative meetings to discuss the use of CCTV cameras. Attendees are political aspirants, tribal elders, and civilian poll watchers in partnership with COMELEC officers and other stakeholders. As proposed and suggested, the presence of the surveillance cameras would prevent election frauds, irregularities and other unnecessary actions that may come from groups or individuals planning to commit such actions.

Philippines: Long road to recovery for survivors of Typhoon Bopha

More than four months have passed since Eastern Mindanao was hit by a typhoon that destroyed the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. This is an update on what the ICRC is doing to help them get back on their feet again.

Typhoon Bopha (known locally as Pablo) has had a devastating impact on the south-eastern Philippines, destroying infrastructure and displacing thousands. While continuing to distribute food and other relief items to more than 273,000 people in the two worst-hit regions of Eastern Mindanao, the ICRC and the Philippine Red Cross have now launched income generation projects and begun improving communities’ longer-term access to shelter, clean water, and health care.

"Many people lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the havoc wreaked by the typhoon in December 2012," said Pascal Mauchle, head of the ICRC delegation in the Philippines. "It is a long and difficult process for them to rebuild their lives from scratch."

"What survivors most need now is help to quickly recover from this harrowing experience and get back on their feet again. The ICRC is providing sustainable access to drinking water and health care, supporting families in their efforts to rebuild longer-lasting shelters, and finding ways to kick-start their livelihoods. At the same time, we are also delivering emergency aid to cover essential needs," Mr Mauchle added.
