9-hour daily rotational brownout up in Zamboanga del Sur

By Hirohito D. Cadion

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, April 15 (PNA) -- The thousands of member-consumers of the Zamboanga del Sur Electric Cooperative-1 (Zamsureco-1) will have to contend with nine hours daily rotational brownout brought about by the drop of power supply.

Liberal Cabatcha, Zamsureco-1 information officer, said the imposition of nine-hour brownout took effect Tuesday as the energy supplied by the National Power Corporation (Napocor) to the cooperative dropped by more than half.

Cabatcha said Napocor only supplies nine megawatts (MW), which is 11-MW lesser of the 20-MW contracted power supply to Zamsureco-1 following the reduction in power generation.

Cabatcha said this came after the power generation of the Agus and Pulangi hydro-electric power plants dropped by 55.5 percent from the total of 1,000-MW to only 445-MW.

He said the cause in the reduction in power generation is the receding water level in Lake Lanao due to the dry spell.

With the situation, he said Zamsureco-1 has a power deficit of 19-MW since the peak load of the cooperative is 30-MW.
Aside from Napocor, he said Zamsureco-1 is supplied by two Independent Power Producers (IPPs)--Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI) and Mapalad Power Corporation (Mapalad).

He said that each of the two IPPs supplies five MW to Zamsureco-1.

The daily rotational brownout is being implemented three times a day at three-hour duration per service area.

Zamsureco-1, which was established in August 25, 1972, serves 69,857 connections in this city and in 24 of the 26 municipalities of this province. (PNA)
