Footbridge connecting Baludo and Lower Tiparak collapsed |
PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Aug. 1 (PNA) -- Four barangays in the nearby town of Tambulig were placed under state of calamity as floods brought about by inclement weather condition damaged some PHP15 million worth of crops in these areas.
Francisco Maca, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Officer, told the Philippines News Agency that the flood hit
barangays San Jose, Baludo, Lower Tiparak, and Sumalig after the Salug River
Dako overflowed due to heavy rains since Friday until Monday.
Gov. Antonio Cerilles on Monday convened the Provincial
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) in an emergency meeting
to address the situation in the four barangays in Tambulig.
The PDRRMC has placed these barangays under state of
calamity to enable them to utilize the calamity fund to provide assistance to
the affected residents.
Inclement weather in Region 9, however, is not due to the
onslaught of severe tropical storm 'Carina', which exited the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday morning.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) said Monday that Region 9 (Zamboanga
Peninsula) and other parts of the country such as Metro Manila and Western
Visayas may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers
or thunderstorms.
Maca said they have difficulty in sending relief goods to
the affected families since the four barangays were isolated after the
footbridge connecting Baludo and Lower Tiparak collapsed.
