Red Cross Award for Humanitarian Reporting 2013 launched

Nominations are now open for the second Red Cross Award for Humanitarian Reporting, a unique competition for the media in the Philippines.

Open to all journalists and photojournalists based in the country, this contest aims to recognize stories and images that provide excellent insight and responsibly depict the consequences of armed conflict and armed violence on civilians.

An initiative of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the competition is held in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, with the support of International News Safety Institute (Asia-Pacific office), The Peace and Conflict Journalism Network Philippines, Philippine Center for Photojournalism, and Rotary Club of Manila.

Like the original contest launched in 2011, this second edition seeks to highlight respect for human dignity amid armed violence and to promote international humanitarian law, the rules that seeks to limit, for humanitarian reasons, the effects of armed conflict.

The 2013 award introduces a new category—photography—alongside previous ones such as print, online, video/TV, and audio/radio. Qualified entries must be published from 1 May 2012 to 1 May 2013; while the deadline for submission is on 31 May 2013.

Prizes include plaques, trophies, training on conflict reporting and news safety (local and international), gadgets, and other freebies.
