Police Regional Office 9 Commemorates the 30th Death Anniversary of Col. Romeo Abendan and Gen. Eduardo Batalla

PAGADIAN CITY (Jan. 8, 2019) - The Police Regional Office 9 commemorated the 30th death anniversary of two great police officers through wreath-laying ceremonies and traditional 21-gun salute in Camp Gen. Eduardo Batalla and Camp Col. Romeo Abendan, Zamboanga City on January 7, 2018.

Police Senior Superintendent Narciso B Verdadero, Deputy Regional Director Operations (DRDO) spearheaded the wreath-laying ceremony of the late Gen. Eduardo Batalla at the Camp Gen. Eduardo Batalla, RT Lim Boulevard, Cawa-Cawa, Zamboanga City at 7:00 AM, attended by personnel of PRO9 and Regional Supports Units.

Meanwhile, Police Senior Superintendent Christopher C Birung, Regional Chief Directorial Staff (RCDS) led the wreath lying ceremony of the late Col. Romeo A. Abendan at Camp Romeo Abendan, Zamboanga City at 7:30 AM, attended by Mrs. Gloria Abendan and personnel of PRO9 and PNP Special Action Forces.

The PRO9 cited the heroic act of late Col. Abendan and Gen. Batalla as they sacrificed their own lives in the name of peace. They had shown an example of heroism and valor.

Mrs. Gloria Abendan, the widow of the late Col. Romeo A Abendan, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the men and women of PRO9 for always remembering and acknowledging the heroism made by her late husband.

It can be recalled that on January 5, 1989, Gen. Eduardo Batalla, commander of the Philippine Constabulary in Western Mindanao and his chief of staff Col. Abendan, along with five other people were taken hostage by discharged policemen and soldiers led by Patrolman Rizal Alih in Batalla’s own office at the Recom-9 Headquarters (now Camp Batalla) in RT Lim Boulevard, Cawa-Cawa, Zamboanga City.

The unfortunate mutiny led to the death of 19 people including the two top officers when the release negotiation failed. (By JONG CADION with PRO9 PIO PR and photos)
