Marine troops facilitate settlement of dispute in Tawi-Tawi

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur (June 8, 2021) - Through the efforts of the troops of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi, a conflict between the lessor and lessee of a commercial lot in Tawi-Tawi was settled immediately.

“Based on the report from the ground, two armed men identified as Jamal Musli, 36 and Hersin Musli, 29, both residents of Barangay Bunay-Bunay, South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi appeared at the Smart Tower located in Lookan Island, same municipality at 2 p.m., June 4,” said Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., Commander, Western Mindanao Command.

The two are siblings and rightful owners of the land where the tower was sited.

According to MBLT-6 Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Benjie Pendon, the duo threatened the workers of Smart Tower that they will wreak havoc if the company fails to pay its monthly rental.

“Prior to the incident, the suspects had a heated argument against the caretaker of the Smart tower regarding the unpaid rentals of the company,” said Lt. Col. Pendon.

Marine troops proceeded to the area to verify the incident and it was revealed that the engineer of said tower instantaneously settled the monetary accountability with the landowners (the Musli’s).

In coordination with Lookan Barangay Chairman Mussa Ammad, the duo handed over to the marine troops their loose firearms including one M16A1 rifle with short magazine loaded with three ammunition and one cal. 45 pistol with one standard magazine loaded with three ammunition at 36th Marine Company Headquarters in Poblacion, Sapa-Sapa, same province on the morning of June 6.

The handing over of firearms was witnessed by Chairman Ammad and Lookan Barangay Secretary Ronnie Julsali.

“My guidance to all marines in the area is not to tolerate this kind of act. Intimidating others especially using loose firearms will be penalized and we will make sure that our policies are understood by the locals. They have to abide by the rule of law.

This is a basic condition to have a peaceful and safe environment to live in. We appreciate the efforts of the local LGU in assisting the marines to settle the matter peacefully,” said Brig. Gen. Arturo Rojas, Commander, Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi.

Surrendered firearms are in the custody of MBLT-6 for safekeeping.

“The settlement of the dispute is an indication of a resilient community and a manifestation of cooperation to peace and development in the community,” said Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr.

Since January 2021, a total of 30 loose firearms were turned over to the troops of Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi. (By JONG CADION with report and photos from WestMinCom-PIO)
