PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Oct. 6 (PNA) -– The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) has estimated that more than Php1 million worth of properties were destroyed in a whirlwind which swept across five barangays on Sunday, in this city.

CDRRMC Coordinator Haron Damada said Monday that no casualties were reported when the whirlwind swept barangays Balangasan, Sta. Lucia, San Francisco, Sta. Maria and Tuburan around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Damada said the whirlwind was spawned by the inclement weather the region had been experiencing the past few days brought about by the Intertropical Convergenze Zone (ITCZ).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the ITCZ continued until Monday to be the dominant weather system affecting the country.

Damada said among the properties that were damaged include electrical posts, houses made of light materials, roofs of houses, vehicles and a memorial park. The gymnasium of this city was also partially destroyed.

Meanwhile, he said the CDRRMC continues the conduct of road clearing operations until Monday as some of the roads were closed by uprooted trees. (PNA)
