PAGADIAN CITY,
Zamboanga del Sur, Dec. 10 (PNA) -– Two municipalities from this province
received P3,654,000 worth of project assistance from the Department of Trade
and Industry (DTI) through the Grassroots Participatory Budgeting (GPB), a DTI
official announced Wednesday.
DTI Provincial
Director Ma. Socorro Atay said that P3,084,000 of the P3,654,000 was released
to the municipality of Ramon Magsasay while the remaining P570,000 to the town
of Kumalarang.
Atay said that the
municipality of Ramon Magsaysay will utilize the P1,802,000 of the P3,084,000
to put up a mini coconut oil mill. The oil mill will become one of the Ramon
Magsaysay town’s economic enterprises.

Leonilo Borinaga, Sr. said the oil mill will cater to the needs of the coconut
farmers, who maintains at least 11,000 hectares farm, in his town.

Borinaga said the
establishment of the coconut oil mill will also generate employment since 40 to
50 personnel are needed for the operation of the facility aside from addressing
the needs of the coconut farmers.
Atay said the
remaining P1,282,000 of the P3,084,000 will be utilized as follows: one-town,
one-product (OTOP) store, P712,000; bamboo craft development, P380,000; and,
productin shop for novelty items, P190,000.
For Kumalarang, Atay
said that the P380,000 of the P570,000 will be used for mat weaving project and
the remaining P190,000 for handicraft livelihood project.
Atay said the GPB,
which is formerly known as the Bottoms-Up Budgeting (BUB) Process, is a budget
and poverty reduction reform agenda that aims to make the national budget a
participatory process.
GPB ensures that
communities are informed, consulted, and actually take part in projects that
their local government will implement. In that sense, communities own their
projects and take part in shaping their development.(PNA)
