ZAMBOANGA
CITY--Six centenarians in the Zamboanga
region are set to receive this month the PHP100,000 Centenarian Gift for each
of them from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD 9 (Zamboanga)
information officer, said Wednesday that three of the centenarians are from
this city, two from Isabela City, and one from Zamboanga Sibugay.
However, Salvador said one of the three
from Zamboanga City, who are all female, will be awarded posthumously since she
died recently. The award will be received by her family.
Salvador said the awarding of the
Centenarian Gift and Letter of Felicitation from President Rodrigo Duterte will
be done house-to-house since most of the awardees are sickly.
“We in the DSWD wanted to really
provide immediately the benefits intended for them so that they can use it for
whatever needs,” he said.
The grant of the Centenarian Gift and
Letter of Felicitation is the government’s way of honoring Filipinos who reach
the age of 100, whether residing in the Philippines or abroad.
The giving of award is pursuant to
Republic Act No. 10868, otherwise known as the “Centenarians Act of 2016”.
Salvador said the six centenarians who
will receive the gift this month would be the second batch of awardees this
year. The first batch, consisting of five centenarians, received their gift
first quarter of the year. (PNA)
