Western Mindanao Command Chief Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr. said, “Based on the report from the ground, combined elements of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-12 and the 51st Special Action Company conducted joint law enforcement operations at around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, to serve the warrants of arrest with Criminal Case No. 485-4 for multiple Murders issued on February 17, 2000 by Hon. Judge Ernesto Gutierrez at the Regional Trial Court, 9th Judicial Region, Branch 4, Parang, Sulu against four wanted individuals namely: Suraidi Umbing, Ilol Umbing, Sabri Umbing, and Arasad Mukin.”
The said operations was resulted in the apprehension of Suraidi Umbing, 70 years old, married, and a resident of Km. 2, Batu-Batu, Panglima Sugala and Arasad Mukin, 56 years old, married, and a resident of Barangay Sumangday of the same municipality. They were both arrested in their respective residences.
“The operating troops seized one M1 Garand rifle with eight rounds of ammunition from Suraidi Umbing’s possession, one AK47 assault rifle with six magazines with 147 rounds of ammunition, and one Samsung Cellphone from Mukin,” said Lt. Col. Henry Espinosa, Commanding Officer of the MBLT-12.
Meanwhile, Sabri Umbing, one of the four targets, resisted arrest and fired upon the government forces which forced the latter to retaliate. Umbing was wounded and was immediately evacuated to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.Seized from Sabri Umbing’s possession were one pistolized M14 rifle with one magazine and 17 rounds of ammunition.
Ilol Umbing however managed to escape and was not in his residence during the serving of the warrant. Nonetheless, the arresting team was able to recover one AK47 assault with two long magazines, four short magazines, and 57 rounds of ammunition; and one long M16 magazine with 88 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition.
“The apprehended personalities are now under the custody of 51SAC and will subsequently be turned over to Panglima Sugala Municipal Police Station for proper disposition,” Lt. Col. Espinosa further said.
Brig. Gen. Arturo Rojas, Commander of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi commended the operating troops for the successful operation.
“This success is attributed to all men and women in uniform, our intelligence operatives, as well as our partners and stakeholders who never fail to support us in all our endeavors, said Brig. Gen. Rojas.
