CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Sept. 18 (PNA) – The Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) is spearheading on Saturday a coastal clean-up
activity to kick-off the observance of the International Clean-up Month here in
Region 9.
Tito
Gadon, DENR regional conservation and development chief, said Friday the
coastal clean-up will be held in 11 coastal barangays in this city namely:
Bomba; Poloyagan; Napolan; Dumagoc; Santa Lucia; Santiago; San Pedro; Lumbia;
Kawit; White Beach; and, Muricay.
Gadon
said similar activity will be also held in the beaches of the nearby towns of
Tukuran and Labangan.
Gadon
said the coastal clean-up will be participated in by the different sectors such
as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), police, military, ROTC cadets of different
schools, and non-government organizations.
“We are
requesting everybody to support the celebration of the International Clean-up
Month from September 19 until October by conducting Costal Clean-up activity in
selected areas here in the region,” he added.
He
urged the people, especially coastal dwellers, to refrain from disposing
garbage on rivers and seashores so as not to destroy “our natural resources.”
He said
there is a need to protect the sea since it is the source of fish of the more
than a dozen canneries based here in the region.

This
year’s observance of the International Coastal Clean-up Month is anchored on
the theme “Bayanihan para sa malinis na Katubigan at Karagatan.” (PNA)
