The military and
local government units in Basilan will now make a concerted effort to go
against the bandit Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
This developed
after a meeting between Gen. Gregorio Catapang, chief of the Armed Forces of
the Philippines (AFP), and Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) on Friday morning (November 7), together with the 11
municipal mayors of the island province.
During the
consultative meeting, all the mayors agreed to cooperate in an all-out
offensive against the ASG.
Hataman explained
that the offensive does not involve military action alone.
"Hindi lang ito simpleng military
action kundi coordinated effort ito ng lahat," Hataman said.
He said that the local officials also discussed about reports of rampant extortion by the bandit group among local residents.
Hataman also
confirmed reports that even mayors in the province have fallen prey to
extortion activities.
Military operations
will be focused on three barangays – Baiwas in Sumisip, Makalang in Albarka,
and One Sitio in Tipo-Tipo. -
