CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, March 28 (PNA) – The police, in coordination with the
military, are tracking down the whereabouts of the remaining members of a
lawless group that figured in a shootout Friday with policemen in the nearby
town of Dinas.
The
shootout, which took place around 4 p.m. Friday, resulted in the death of a
policeman and a leader of the notorious lawless band known as the “Ambol
Group.”
Sr.
Supt. Sofronio Ecaldre, police provincial director, said the shootout occurred
while the policemen were serving arrest warrants on Saudi Manding, the leader
of the Ambol group.
Ecaldre
said Manding suddenly surfaced and opened fire, hitting PO1 Rolando Dumasig
when the policemen were about to encircle his hideout in Barangay Benuatan,
Dinas.
Ecaldre
said Dumasig died while on the way to a hospital.
He
said Manding, who was the number eight most wanted person in Dinas, was also
killed during the shootout.
He
said Manding’s group was involved in series of robbery, gun-for-hire and
illegal drug trade.
He
said that some of the followers of Ambol group, who were with Manding during
the shootout managed to escape and were the object of the manhunt operation.
