Bank Robbery foiled, Suspect killed

PAGADIAN CITY – One of the two suspects of attempted bank robbery was killed after they failed to neutralize the Security Guard of the bank who was able to defend himself during their attack at about 6:00 o’clock early evening, November 4, 2012.

In the initial police investigation said, it was raining and brown out that time along the vicinity of Philippine National Bank (PNB) Rizal Ave. Balangasan, Pagadian City Branch when a certain Guilbert Macaranas, a former Security Guard and Armored Van driver of PNB asked permission to the Security Guard on duty to enter to the premises of the guard house but the first request was not granted, after insisting several times the latter was granted because they were also friends and together under the same security agency, Davao Security Agency (DASIA).

The Security Guard identified as Joel Buhian told police investigator that the 2 suspects went to him twice at the guard house in that afternoon. The first was at about 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon and the second was at about 5:30 pm asking him the same question if their salary was already released.

“I and Macaranas are friends since we were together as security in the said bank for almost one year before the suspect was transferred to Globe Tower in Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur,” Buhian explained.

Buhian added that he had noticed suspicious acts of the companion of his friend who was leaning on the fence beside the exit gate. When he asked who his companion is, Macaranas introduced him as his cousin. But unexpectedly, the latter suddenly entered the guard house carrying handgun and pointed towards him but luckily was able to parry and attempt to grab the pistol but the gun was able to burst and accidentally hit Macaranas at the head.

After Macaranas fell to the ground, the suspect hurriedly run outside that led Buhian to chase the suspect and to fire his issued firearm twice as warning shots.

Macaranas is 32 years old and a resident of Lumbia District Pagadian City and was declared dead on the spot. The Scene of Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered 2 cellular phones from the dead body and the wallet containing his identification card and some pertinent papers.


Police also recovered from the crime scene 1 empty shell of caliber 45 pistol and 2 empty shells of M16 Armalite rifle.


The motorcycle Kawasaki fury, without plate number owned by the suspects was seen abandoned few meters away from the exit gate of the PNB near the guard house was brought to the PNP Station for further verification.  

PNB official’s theory of the incident disclosed that the 2 suspects were planning to conduct bank robbery but unluckily they were not able to neutralize the security guard. They added, one of the suspects has already established pattern of the bank weakness due to his assignment in the bank.

It was learned that only one security guard was assigned in the guard house after banking hours.   
Pagadian City PNP Station Chief P/Supt. Kenneth Mission said, the investigation also considered the angle of the incident as personal grudge between the security guards.
